I totally feel you! Those animal deaths hit harder than almost anything else — Where the Red Fern Grows is absolutely devastating.
There’s actually a reason why so many authors lean on animal losses in stories: it taps into something primal and universal in us. Almost everyone has felt the unconditional love of a pet or the pain of losing something innocent. It's a shortcut straight to the heart.
That said — no worries here, I’d never advocate harming the cat. Fiction’s full of tragedy, but some creatures deserve a happy ending. :)
Just don’t let harm come to the cat. I always hate it when the dog dies. Where the red fern grows? Brutal, I may never recover!
